Rent row rocks royal societies
Article Abstract:
Five learned societies--the Society of Antiquaries in London, the Royal Society of Chemistry, The Geological Society, the Royal Astronomical Society and The Linnean Society London--are locked in an High Court battle with the government over whether or not they should pay rent on the building in London, UK, that has been their home for more than a century. If they lose the case the societies fear that they will have to find rent of up to UKPd1.3 mil/yr. The societies have occupied a building at Burlington House in Piccadilly, London, since the 1870s without anybody suggesting that they should pay for the privilege, but lawyers for John Prescott, deputy prime minister, argue that they societies have been only allowed to remain on the premises on sufferance as "tenants at will".
