UK risks lead in stem cells, warns expert
Article Abstract:
The UK's reputation for world-class research in key areas of science, as well as its ability to retain pioneering scientists, will collapse unless serious funding problems are addressed, claims Miodrag Stojkovic, a leading stem cell researcher who is leaving the UK for better facilities in Spain. Stojkovic warns that research in the UK is already falling behind other countries as a result of poor funding and the cumbersome systems that distribute money.

UK fears Europe control
Article Abstract:
Leading figures within the science community in the UK are trying to wrestle control of the new European Research Council (ERC) away from the European Commission (EC). It is feared that scientific decisions of the ERC, which will fund up to Euro12 billion of basic research, could be compromised by political demands if control is left in the hands of the EC.
