Return of the Welsh nation

Article Abstract:

The Welsh will really be answering the question of whether or not they are a nation when they vote in the devolution referendum on Sep. 18, 1997. The Welsh have strong feelings of identity but, unlike the Scots, find it difficult to relate them to institutions such as a Welsh assembly. Most Welsh people identify more strongly with their locality than with Wales as a whole and therefore find it difficult to imagine Wales as a single entity. However Welsh Office minister Peter Hain points out that Wales would become the only part of the UK ruled directly from London, England, if it rejects devolution.

Shephard's scars

Article Abstract:

Gillian Shephard is the UK Secretary of State for Education and Employment. She entered St Hilda's college at Oxford University in 1958. This was a women's college and Shephard believes that single-sex education is valuable. She argues that women benefit from role models to be found in such institutions. She also studied at a single-sex secondary school. She went to university at a time when only 7% of people entered higher education compared with some 33% in 1996.
