Dearing team dream
Article Abstract:
The UK government is carrying out a review of higher education and an official from the Department of Education and Employment will be secretary of this review. The members of the committee will be named in April 1996, and are scheduled to finalize their report within 15 months. Nominations have come from different groups connected with education in the UK such as the Association of University Teachers. University vice chancellors argue that cultural values and citizenship should have more weight than vocational training.

Follett's FIG leaf for libraries
Article Abstract:
UK university libraries are faced with increased costs for periodicals and increased numbers of students. There is a need for more seats and textbooks, and 25% more seats will be provided but student numbers have increased by 70%. A report chaired by Brian Follett was published in 1993, and libraries have begun to implement its recommendations. The report notes that there are also insufficient funds to maintain research collections. Competition between universities means that co-operation between libraries is hindered.
