Rocks or a hard place
Article Abstract:
Issues relating to the pros and cons of the fieldwork expeditions that are part of undergraduate study are examined. Pros of fieldwork that are identified include the fun nature of the work, allowing the students to appreciate the subject they are studying, the reinforcement that is gained of scientific methods, and an improvement of staff-student interaction, while cons include the fact that fieldwork is staff-student intensive, that the costs can exclude some students, the safety issues involved and the damage that can be caused to sites.
