Critics round on academy
Article Abstract:
Members of the Heads of Educational Development Group, a network of 104 academics who represent universities across the sector, have criticised the final draft of the Higher Education Academy's (HEA) national framework for consultation for failing to raise the status of teaching and learning. It is accepted that the HEA has a tough job in trying to reconcile various different interests but it is argued that a chance has been missed to bring teaching and learning to the foreground and it is suggested that the HEA does not know who its audience is.

Lords in gap year victory
Article Abstract:
The Government has given in to an House of Lords demand in order to ease the passage of its Higher Education Bill. The House of Lords demanded that top-up fees be waived for all students who elected to defer their university places in 2005 in order to take a gap year prior to the introduction of the new variable fees regime. However, the Government used its House of Commons majority to overturn all other defeats inflicted on the Bill by the Lords.
