SPring blossoming for Japan's science
Article Abstract:
The 47 Japanese prefectures are competing for new technological developments to be located in their regions. Aioi, in the Hyogo prefecture, has become the location for the 600 million pounds sterling Spring8 machine. Some 200 research projects have been accepted for the machine which generates bright x-rays for use in scientific experiments. The Japanese government are trying to encourage research in universities to be utilized for industrial purposes. Responsibility for science has been taken over by Monbusho. Government funded research is to be fully evaluated.

Small pause for thought on formula; William Waldegrave on his strategy as minister for science
Article Abstract:
William Waldegrave is the minister for science, overseeing the newly-formed Office of Public Service and Science. His office is looking at the whole range of British science, and the results will be given to the Office of Science and Technology. The review will look at the work done by the research councils, and advise on scientific aspects of government department spending. His department may contract out policy work done for ministers by the civil service.

Trust shares good fortune with science; the growth of the Wellcome Trust
Article Abstract:
The Wellcome Trust is part of Wellcome PLC, the drug company. The trust's research interests include medicine and biology, and by 1993 200 million pounds sterling will be available. Wellcome PLC developed drugs like Retrovir, used in combatting HIV, and has floated on the Stock Exchange, so enabling the trust's budget to increase. Future areas of interest are likely to include careers, money and tropical medicine.
