Sanctions can work
Article Abstract:
The move taken by the Association of University Teachers (AUT) to boycott Bar-Ilan and Haifa Universities in Israel is part of a tradition of non-violent protests against oppressive regimes. It is contended that the situation of the Palestinians under Israel is far worse than that of black South Africans under apartheid and, as the UN is powerless to do anything against Israel as a result of US blocking all attempts to impose sanctions - in the same way that it blocked the imposition of sanctions against apartheid-era South Africa - then it is the responsibility of organisations such as the AUT to take action to express the condemnation of the international community for Israeli policies.

Article Abstract:
An analysis of the state of Western support for university education in the Middle East. It is argued that the West has a duty to support development in the region and that unless this support continues, within 20 years a large proportion of the world's petroleum and mineral resources will be run by an undereducated, underskilled workforce that has little conception of Western values.
