Scientists fear pro-life hijacking of debate
Article Abstract:
The decision by the Commons science and technology committee to allow the public to direct the first stage of a select committee inquiry into the legislation that governs human reproductive technologies has been criticised by a number of scientists. Scientists argue that it is difficult for the public to properly understand the issues that are being debated, that it could be difficult to distinguish between moral values and the public's prejudices and that religious organisations and pro-life groups could effectively hijack the debate and control the direction in which it will develop.

Paediatricians fear 'orchestrated' attacks
Article Abstract:
Doctors may soon stop giving evidence in court to defend children suffering from abuse because of an increasingly organised campaign of intimidation and violence, according to evidence presented by David Southall, a consultant paediatrician at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire, to the conference of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health. Examples given by Southall included one child abuse expert who was threatened with an axe and another who was knocked out and kept prisoner for two hours by the father of an emotionally abused child.
