Scotland welcomes a cultural infusion
Article Abstract:
Edinburgh is marking the Commonwealth heads of government meeting which takes place in the city in Oct 1997 with a series of cultural events which started in Jun 1997 and will go on until Dec 1997. The events include conferences, art exhibitions and lectures. The programme of events is partly aimed at raising awareness of the Commonwealth and helping people find out more about it. Edinburgh University is heavily involved in the programme, reflecting its international commitment and the strong links between many Commonwealth countries and the university's teaching and research work.

Polishing the Scottish jewel
Article Abstract:
Wendy Alexander, Scotland's minister of enterprise and lifelong learning, believes that the Scottish Executive and the Scottish Parliament's enterprise and lifelong learning (ELL) committee needs to create the right environment for developing higher education in Scotland. Alexander has reviewed the state of Scotland's higher education and her findings will be released at Easter 2002.

Scotland eyes US in major overhaul

The role and the future of higher education, will be the next areas of focus by the Scottish Parliament. According to Wendy Alexander, the country's minister for enterprise and life-long learning, the issues to be discussed include management, research priorities, and the role of institutions in meeting the country's need for skills.
