Social and natural must meet
Article Abstract:
A conference at Jagiellonian University, Poland, on research in eastern and central European universities showed both similarities and differences with western universities. There is a similar concern for protecting national intellectal property, but eastern Europe has undergone major changes in the move toward democracy. Natural scientists tended to be apolitical and have remained in their posts or moved into administration. Social scientists were often too closely linked to the old regime to stay in their posts. There is a gap between social and natural scientists and many issues such as ethics need closer collaboration between the two.

Squealing is a human right
Article Abstract:
Many of the people who feel they should reveal corruption or mismanagement in their place of work are deterred because their action may be perceived as being disloyal. Others may be concerned they will lose their jobs and become unemployable as a consequence of their whistle blowing activities. Physician David Kern was dismissed for US Brown University following his decision to reveal the dangers to health of a plant which makes microfibres. At the May 1999 International Peace Conference the position and rights of whistle blowers was discussed.
