When kindness becomes a betrayal
Article Abstract:
Chief rabbi Jonathan Sacks has drawn unprecedented public condemnation from the orthodox Ecclesiastical Courts of Manchester, the Federation of Synagogues and the Union of Orthodox Hebrew Congregations over his decision to attend a memorial meeting for Rabbi Hugo Gryn in Feb. 1997. Gryn was revered by non-Jews who saw him as non-fundamentalist and outward-looking. Sacks did not attend Gryn's funeral but fulfilled the orthodox obligation to comfort mourners by visiting his widow and family. Sacks would be compromising his orthodoxy if he attended Gryn's memorial service.
