Slice of job life is worth bread
Article Abstract:
It is time that the sandwich degree - a degree course in which the student takes a year out to work in the real world on placement in a job related to their field of study - had a renaissance as it can offer a number of benefits to both the student and the university that the student belongs to. It is argued that students tend to return from their placement year with a more mature attitude and that their academic performance benefits as a result, which in turn makes the faculty look better. However, It is acknowledged that there are problems with sandwich degrees, including financial pressures and the lack of any "real" academic credit for what the student learns during the placement year.

Shaping up to take the lead in race for students
Article Abstract:
An examination of the growing popularity of the discipline of sports science at universities. Sports science, once derided as a "Mickey Mouse" subject is becoming more accepted as an academic discipline, with five such departments receiving 5* ratings in the 2001 research assessment exercise, up from no department receiving this rating in 1996. In comparison, only one physiology department received a 5* rating in 2001. Demand for places on sports science courses is also rising, with the number of places on such courses growing to 7,024 in 2002, vs 3,837 in 1997, according to the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service.
