Article Abstract:
Some observers have claimed that there is a bleak future for western universities. However, it would be misguided to predict that the university system will collapse altogether. Universities have had long experience of adapting to changing circumstances, and they are likely to continue to do so. Their cultural role has certainly become less clear, and the significant features with which they have traditionally been associated are now under threat. Critical thinking will be vital if they are to enter a period of renewal.
