Foresight Saga
Article Abstract:
The UK government's Technology Foresight programme aims to establish closer links between industry and higher education. This is also the stated aim of many universities, and the programme therefore has positive implications. However, it is worrying to note that there is a contrast between the programme's aims and the way in which the forthcoming Research Assessment Exercise seems to be moving. It is possible that the Research Assessment Exercise panels will not take Technology Foresight into account.

Bells and whistles for the wedding march
Article Abstract:
University computer centers and libraries are developing formal links which range from merging services to keeping separate structures under a single dean. Some observers argue that expediency is at play since libraries are one of a number of users of computer services. Staff in merged departments need to acquire new skills which do not fall within one particular category. Convergence allows for duplication of services to be controlled and new services to be offered.
