Article Abstract:
Well-qualified university graduates must demonstrate numerous other skills when job seeking, with candidates likely to be required to pass two or more interviews and undertake personality questionnaires and psychometric aptitude tests. Employers will seek evidence of skills such as decision-making, problem solving, communication and business awareness. Interviews fail to select the best person in 90% of cases, which can be costly for the employer. Some employers are criticized for having excessive expectations, however, which deters some students from applying for jobs.

Some female vice-chancellors are choosing to design their own formal gowns. They are concerned about the way they dress often choosing to wear designer clothes for work. College of Ripon and Yorks St John Chief Executive Dianne Wilcocks has had a French navy tunic made to wear at formal occasions. Surrey Institute of Art and Design Principal Elaine Thomas points out the customary gown and mortar board is unsuitable for women. She has chosen a long fitted tunic in black.

In 1994, women accounted for 17.3% of the total academic staff in old universities, according to statistics from the Universities Statistical Record. Only 13.5% of women held positions superior to that of a principal lecturer, and 6% had professorships. Christine King is one of three women to take up positions of vice chancellor in September 1995. The role of women in academic management is discussed further.
