Stealthy steps to success: art and design is a European growth area, but it remains bedevilled by conservatism
Article Abstract:
The European Commission began to compile a list of centres offering higher education in art, design and the performing arts two years ago, and it became apparent there was a vast hidden sector excluded from education programme development due to size or private status. The Arts Education and Training Initative aimed to develop the sector and is the only live information available on the sector. It found a trend towards the conservative although new technologies are widely used for imagery. It was also apparent that there was a super league of European design colleges.

Pictures tell more than one story
Article Abstract:
It is becoming increasingly common for higher education establishments to build up art collections in digital form, making images available to students over a network using Web browsers. Students can build up their own collections of data, and this approach therefore serves as a study aid. However, it must be remembered that the use of images on the Web can never be a substitute for active discussion of a work of art or for visiting an art gallery.
