Strings that strangle freedom
Article Abstract:
The Hebdomadal Council, the main governing body of Oxford University, England, should consider voting against the establishment of a business school, which will have funding of 20 million pounds sterling from the Wafic Said Foundation. The Council will probably decide to go ahead with the plan in the Jun 1997 vote, but this yes vote will follow a previous rejection, engineered by the congregation of dons. The university should be cautious in proceeding both because of Wafic Said's reluctance to give control to the university and the often societally detrimental studies produced by business management schools.

A pluralist escape from Faust
Article Abstract:
Opposition to the establishment of the business school at Oxford University to be funded by Wafic Said has arisen, not from the challenge to academic integrity, but from an underlying resentment of the pluralism which exists in business schools. Pluralism allows independence, and business schools, alone amongst the major sections of higher education, have that pluralism because their income comes from the students. The actions of Wafic Said, in giving his donation for the building of the business school, are consistent with the aims of the university, and should be acceptable to it.
