Sussex rebels pray for coup

Sussex University's vice-chancellor, Alasdair Smith, is facing rebellion among both staff and students over planned cuts as the university struggles with debts of over GBP 38 million. Academics are concerned that the management is being secretive in attempts to cut jobs by inviting some staff for interview to suggest they take voluntary severance or early retirement.

Lecturing now women's work as men seek cash
Article Abstract:
English universities are seeing a rise in the number of female academics as more men move away from lecturing, according to a report on the university workforce by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (Hefce). In 2004-05 46 percent of lecturers were female, up from 34 percent in 1995-96.
