Swampy's smart set
Article Abstract:
Environmental literary criticism, commonly known as ecocriticism, is being promoted as the new radical criticism. Jonathan Bate, professor of English at the University of Liverpool, coined the term ecocriticism in his 1991 book 'Romantic Ecology' which he wrote as an alternative to new historic criticism. However new historicists such as Nicholas Roe of St Andrews University do not see a great gulf between environmental criticism and new historicism. Bate contended that nature could be considered political in a broad sense while Roe argues that nature writing is political rather than nostalgic.
