Their hands on your genes
Article Abstract:
American academics warn of a tide of testing mania which is threatening to sweep away people's civil liberties. Academics fear that there are sinister motives behind the requirement that all US military personnel provide blood samples from which their DNA is extracted. They are not convinced by the US Dept. of Defense's claim that they are needed for identification purposes in the event of death in service since civilian staff also have to give samples. Council for Responsible Genetics board member Philip Bereano claims that genetic testing is no less dangerous than previous attempts to restrict people's rights.

Victim mentalities
Article Abstract:
There has been a suggestion that murders committed by a child, Mary Bell, when she was 11-years-old were the result of abuse she herself suffered as a child. Yet the issue is complex, and children are aware that they are doing wrong when they carry out serious crimes. Abused boys are more likely than girls to abuse others, and girls are more likely to harm themselves. Physical punishment and starvation combined with sexual abuse may make a child more likely to become an abuser, while positive experiences such as a good relationship with a teacher can help prevent abused children from becoming abusers.

Only the rich and gifted need apply
Article Abstract:
Fears that the introduction of undergraduate tuition fears and the phasing out of maintenance grants will leave students with such large debts that only the most wealthy will be able to go on to further study appear justified. Students currently studying for PhDs are already struggling financially and some research councils are having problems recruiting good quality students for PhDs. PhD student Angie Austin is considering abandoning her research for a well-paid job and her fiance, who is also studying for a PhD, works in a hotel to earn money to survive.
