Taking the fiction out of science's portrayal
Article Abstract:
An analysis of the value of degree courses in science fiction and the way in which journalists and the public misinterpret such courses and their objectives. It is argued that, as the main exposure of the majority of people to science and scientists is through their representation in works of fiction, it is crucial to understand how scientists are being portrayed in the media if the public are to be given a realistic idea of what science is really like and scientists are to understand what the public really think they do.
