Lancaster moves to tape its vivas
Article Abstract:
Lancaster University has introduced systematic recording of its PhD vivas, becoming one of the first academic institutions to make such a move amid calls for a more transparent and regulated complaints system for research students. The university made the decision that vivas must be recorded or take place in front of an independent observer in order to reassure all participants in the viva process that the system is fair and transparent.

Push for viva ground rules
Article Abstract:
Common ground rules for PhD vivas should be implemented following research which has revealed wide disparities in the way vivas are conducted. It is contended that guidelines would be of particular benefit to female students, who are much more daunted than their male counterparts by the prospect of a face-to-face questioning of their PhD thesis.
