Task force sparks fair access debate
Article Abstract:
The UK government's admissions task force has launched a public debate on whether students who come from disadvantaged backgrounds should benefit from extra concessions when they apply to university. Steven Schwartz, vice-chancellor of Brunel University, in his first report as chairman of the government's admissions to higher education steering group unveiled nine aspects of the experience of an applicant that an admissions officer might consider. These include the background of the applicant and the type of school attended.

Austria worries that EU influx will limit access to courses
Article Abstract:
A ruling by the European Court that all students from the European Union must be treated the same means that Austria's policy of accepting any domestic student with a basic high-school leaving certificate into higher education has come to an end. The ruling means that Austrian students will no longer be guaranteed a place on the most popular university courses as large numbers of foreign students are expected to begin applying for places.
