Tea cakes give way to the hard sell
Article Abstract:
The University of Birmingham, UK, has had to adopt an aggressive approach to attract postgraduate students, even though the quality of its research is rated amongst the best in the UK. On the basis of the findings of a MORI poll which it commissioned, the university has published a postgraduate prospectus giving the telephone numbers of potential supervisors as well as details of their interests and publications. If it is to attract the best students and compete internationally, the university must only undertake research that is of international interest.

The deep background of book history
Article Abstract:
UK and US book historians met in 1993 to form the Society for the History of Authorship, Reading and Publishing. They will assess the "creation, diffusion and reception of the written word." It is hoped that a Master of Arts degree will be created to study the history of the book. Besides the UK other countries such as Franch, Germany and the US have a tradition of book history which is now being exploited.
