Southampton University is finalising a grading system intended to put research and teaching staff on an equal footing as regards pay. The system places posts in teaching, research, enterprise and consultancy into one group and equivalent jobs in these areas are placed on the same level in the national pay framework.

London Met staff win contract fight

London Metropolitan University has been ordered to pay GBP160,000 to 23 staff in a 'class action' lawsuit for unfair dismissal. An employment tribunal ruled that the lecturers were unfairly dismissed after the university ended their contracts and moved them to new ones in August 2004.

Living wage victory for London cleaners

Queen Mary, University of London, is the first university in London to pay its cleaners a 'living wage'. Contract cleaners at Queen Mary will, from this week, see their pay rise to GBP 6.70 per hour, from GBP 5.50 currently, by end-2007.
