The Bible or psychoanalysis: religion's challenge to psychology
Article Abstract:
The '90s economic and mental health care trends are affecting America's therapy industry adversely. The tightened budget is forcing mental-health care workers to switch to new careers, but the more interesting factor is the competition from organized religion. The so-called 'congregation-based counselling' definitely has conservative tenets. The trend may finally trace a full circle to the time when Richard Cabot, who created the first hospital-based counselling and social-work center, lamented that social work was losing its religious foundation. Definitely, the therapy industry is returning to its roots.
