Bleak picture for young in promised land

Article Abstract:

The UK Labour government has created a very confusing situation for students and potential students by choosing to accept only those parts of the Dearing report with which it agreed. It has handled the issue of tuition fees particularly badly, and this has deterred many potential students from applying to universities and colleges. When in opposition, the Labour party claimed that it was unfair to make students contribute to their own education. However, it has now introduced policies which will force students to pay more than they would have done under a Conservative government.

Article Abstract:

There is a need for British medical schools to cooperate in order to increase the numbers of medical students by 20% or 1,000, a level recommended by a government committee. Medical schools will be consulted on how this should be achieved, and they should avoid taking a short-term view to cut costs, though efficiency improvements are possible. There is also a need to ensure that trained doctors are retained, and this can be achieved by allowing for greater flexibility to allow women doctors to have children.
