Article Abstract:
Traditionally composers and writers have benefited copyright protection, a protection not accorded to works which appear on online computer networks. However, Imprimatur (Intellectual Property Rights Model and Terminology for Universal Reference), an international multimedia project, was introduced in Brussels, Belgium in early Dec 1995 to address whether the work still belongs to the author after it has been digitised and if so how intellectual rights can be protected. The Authors' Licensing and Collecting Society of the UK will run the project.

Rapacious cut and paste; electronic ways in which authors can keep track of what they write

There is concern in the writing community that textbooks will become obsolete. Information will be accessed via CD-ROM, electronic publishing and portable disk readers. Readers will be able to download information onto their own computers. The increase in computer packages for desk-top publishing also has implications for the publishing fraternity. Both writers and publishers are concerned that accessing and downloading information electronically will defraud them of their income.

Whose text is it anyway?; the blurring of authorship by new technology
Article Abstract:
Many students and researchers use new technology such as databases, CD ROMS and scanners to obtain information. There is some concern that the use of these technologies disguises the true authorship of the original work. It is hoped that the law on copyright can clarify the issue in a similar way to the one on photocopying. Some observers fear that increases in student numbers will lead to more pressure on resources and thus more electronic plagiarism.
