Why lifelong learning is not a policy
Article Abstract:
The report of the Fryer committee, established by the Government to advise it on lifelong learning, sets out an agenda for creating a learning culture for all. The report is based on the assumption that the learning society has not yet arrived, despite correctly pointing out that many people may not appreciate that they are learning. The report argues in favour of an institutionalised learning system, but not only is it debatable whether learning can ever be the subject of public policy, but the learning the committee proposes will not equip lifelong learners with enthusiasm for learning.

College shuffle in ten steps
Article Abstract:
Colleges and universities in the UK should be reorganised, to enable them to work together to provide a comprehensive service to all students. Ten steps must be followed to make the necessary changes in post-compulsory education. Additional investment by the state is vital and should include 100 million pounds sterling to revitalize the post-compulsory education system. Teachers should be given adequate pay and praised for their work. A-level examinations should have a wider base and vocational/academic courses made more available. Elitism in Oxbridge must also be abolished.
