The sprint into print
Article Abstract:
Francis Brooke, publisher for Manchester University Press, explains that university presses are considered a valuable asset as British universities move from cost-cutting to competition. The research assessment exercise (RAE) has placed a new emphasis on quality academic publishing although Middlesex University Press is typical of new presses in claiming that it was not established as a direct response to the RAE. University presses are anxious not to be seen as vanity presses and while not all are unashamedly commercial, they tend to be required to break even.
