The vanishing educator: African-American teacher pool is running on empty
Article Abstract:
National Education Assn. statistics show that African American teachers comprised a mere 6.9% of the total teaching force in 1992. The percentage is expected to decline to 5% by the year 2000. This is a disturbing trend considering that the need for a culturally diverse teacher pool is growing due to the increasing proportion of minority students in the US. The factors that lead African Americans to avoid the teaching profession and strategies to attract them back are discussed.

Give students a job-seeking edge
Article Abstract:
Teachers in the field of vocational education can improve their students' job opportunities by making them create their own portfolios that give immediate evidence of their skills and talents. The resume part of the portfolio should include projects, courses and research papers which can be supplemented by other materials such as certificates and grade reports. Students should take care to match their resumes with the job requirements of their prospective employers.
