Article Abstract:
A professor of sociology at Kent University argues that the UK government's widening access agenda for higher education merely panders to the concept of the student as customer and that this actually undermines the whole point of higher education. It is contended that in a customer-based system it is assumed that the customer is right and that the service provider is not there to question the beliefs or taste of the customer, whereas the whole purpose of higher education is to educate the tastes of students and to get them to re-examine their existing beliefs.

Article Abstract:
It is argued that as the higher education system in the United Kingdom changes into one where universities are regarded as businesses and students as customers, there is a danger that the message is being sent out that fee-paying overseas students can simply buy their way into the university system. It is contended that this would have a corrosive effect and it would only be a matter of time before the amount of money a student had began to influence the way they were treated.
