Time to break the grip of the old boy's club
Article Abstract:
The anonymity of both the applicant and referees should be preserved during the application of funds for research. Younger academics are often discriminated against by their older peers, who prefer to award funding to research carried out by their friends. The professors who are asked to act as referees often use personal judgements, rather than informative data, to decide if a project is worthwhile. The rejection of a research project should be fully justified by the referees. The reduction in funding will mean changes to the system are vital.

Romania on road to Erasmus
Article Abstract:
Romania will join the European Union Erasmus program for educational exchanges. Romania will have to pay 52 billion lei to enter the student mobility program called Socrates. This sum could have increased salaries for academics in Romania by 10%. Not all Romanians agree with the decision, though there is support for closer links with the European Union. Students in Romania face an accommodation shortage and international relations offices are not always open or functioning. Meanwhile, Bulgaria is to join Erasmus in 1999.
