'To the question, what did you do in the truly great war - that of the survival of the human race - would your answer be, "I bought an SUV"?'
Article Abstract:
The creation of a general culture of sustainability should be at the top of everybody's agenda if the human race is going to win the war for its own survival. It is suggested that before any policy decision is made, government and industry should determine whether or not the policy will make a positive or negative contribution to sustainability. Areas identified as needing special attention with regard to sustainability are water supply, solar energy generation and the development of strains of wheat and rice capable of fixing nitrogen.

'"Jaws" was attacking my bumper, trying to shove me into the slow lane. Why are cars getting larger when we need greater fuel efficiency'
Article Abstract:
Issues relating to the modern need to make better use of our resources are examined in comparison to the changes wrought by James Watt and his addition of the condenser to the basic steam engine design created in 1712 by Newcomen. It is argued that the youngsters of today need to effectively make the same kind of leap that Watt made over Newcomen and begin realising the promise of nanoscience and nanotechnology if the world is to begin making efficient use of its available power.

Article Abstract:
Issues relating to the concerns voiced about the potential impact of nanotechnology are examined. It is argued that while there are some small drawbacks with all new technologies and that in the past mistakes have been made, this does not mean that there should be an end to the development and exploitation of new technologies.
