Science in the UK has become part of a political tug-of-war between Chancellor Gordon Brown and Prime Minister Tony Blair. Recent research policy has been generally regarded as a success, with Brown unveiling a well received ten-year investment plan in July 2004. It is believed that Blair now wants to regain control of the science agenda.

Luxembourg pledges to double research cash as Dutch ponder E1bn boost

Benelux countries are increasing spending on university research, with Luxembourg promising to double the country's research budget by 2009. The Dutch government is considering a recommendation that a further Euro 1 billion is required every year to maintain standards.
