Trouble brewing over part-timers
Article Abstract:
The indiscriminate use of hourly paid, part-time and fixed-term teachers by some university departments is storing up financial and legal trouble, a conference of linguists and human resource managers organised by the Standing Conference of Heads of Modern Languages in Universities in London, England, has been told. Under new employment law which is due to come into force in October 2003, universities will be compelled to transfer fixed-term staff over to permanent contracts by 2006 unless there is a valid reason for exclusion, however, the position of those on fractional fixed-term contracts and hourly paid teachers was unclear and may only be determined by case law in which comparisons could be drawn with permanent lecturing staff. Around 20,000 hourly paid lecturers are expected to transferred to permanent contracts, according to the Universities and Colleges Employers' Association and the Association of University Teachers.

Policy limbo leaves staff vulnerable
Article Abstract:
Universities have been accused of leaving staff and students open to abuse following research which revealed that 50 out of 102 institutions surveyed in the UK do not have a policy in place to govern relationships between students and faculty members. Trade unions and experts warned that clear rules and openness are essential to protect all involved where issues of fairness and trust could be at stake.
