Article Abstract:
UK university vice-chancellors received a 4.8% pay increase on average in 1997-98, with the dean of the London Business School having the highest annual salary of 207,000 pounds sterling. University of Bath vice-chancellor David VandeLinde had an 8.9% pay rise to 147,000 pounds sterling, while University College London vice-chancellor Sir Derek Roberts earned 146,194 pounds sterling. The best kept low pay secret around
Article Abstract:
UK university staff have seen an increase in their pay of 271% between 1979 and 1995. Some other groups have seen higher pay rises. Academics have carried out productivity improvements but are not being rewarded enough for this. Student numbers are no longer being increased so pay rises have to be funded or spending elsewhere must be reduced. There are incentive schemes but basic pay rates are not high enough. Some academics can be paid higher wages but this means there is less funding to pay other academics. There is not enough publicity about this issue.
