Unity of left and right puts state under siege
Article Abstract:
The government in Italy has had too much control in many areas including education and recently supporters of the left have joined forces with the right to oppose excessive bureaucracy. Legislation to reduce this will make life easier for the universities, which will become more autonomous and be able, for the first time, to design their own courses and appoint their own academics. This will be the fourth important new law in higher education in the last two years. There has also been introduced, on a country-wide basis, a short degree course matching Italy's economic and social needs.

Market forces dictating
Article Abstract:
Some 25% of students studying at universities which were originally built for black students (HBUs) are able to find work on graduating compared to 56% from historically white universities (HWUs). Many black students are choosing to attend the HWUs resulting in HBUs losing students and funding. More students are attending technikons. Private institutions are also more popular and have recorded a 25-30% increase in students for 1999. The government welcomes the changes because they have to pay less for higher education as private institutions are not state funded.
