Teacher training brought under the quality umbrella
Article Abstract:
The Higher Education Funding Council for England has published new proposals for evaluating the quality of teacher training separately from other subjects in United Kingdom higher educational establishments. The Council proposes joint assessment with the Office for Standards in Education (OFSTED) using methods similar to those employed for assessing teaching quality for other courses. Assessments of courses for secondary school teachers is scheduled for completion in 1994, with assessment of courses for primary school teachers scheduled for completion in 1996. Funding will be linked to the rating of courses. The new proposals follow criticisms of earlier proposals.

Speaking tongues - tool or trade?
Article Abstract:
The growing number of college students wishing to take a foreign language as an extra subject and linguistic option is eroding the traditional modern language courses which look at the history, culture and literature of other countries. Students now studying foreign languages wish purely to gain an extra skill and see fluency as an important asset in the job market.
