Vocational degrees
Article Abstract:
Simon Uttley, a Jesuit undergraduate at Oxford University, England, admits that being a monk as well as a student is not always easy. Benedictine monk Brother Anthony Marett-Crosby echoes Uttley's comment that being at Oxford provides a constant reminder of the things he has given up. However Uttley points out that participating in ordinary Oxford undergraduate life can provide someone who has entered orders with an invaluable sense of perspective and clarity of vision. Benedictine monk Father Henry Wansbrough, Master of St Benet's Hall, feels that it is important for monks to have a wider experience.

'Keep your mind in hell and despair not.' (interview of philosopher Gillian Rose; Perspective)(Interview)
Article Abstract:
Professor of social and political thought in the department of sociology at Warwick University, England, Gillian Rose considers herself lucky to be having her death, arguing that dying as a result of ovarian cancer is better than dying in an accident. Rose has lived her life by philosophy since being called to it at the age of 17. She maintains that the world is hungry for hard-nosed philosophy, her powerful autobiographical narrative, 'Love's Work,' in which she weaves together threads of philosophy and personal life, having sold out within two weeks of its publication in 1995.
