Water and troubled oil

Article Abstract:

Greenpeace has put pressure on Shell to dispose of the Brent Spar oil platform on land rather than at sea, but this may not be the most environmentally sound course of action. There would be little chance of contaminants from the Brent Spa affecting humans if it were disposed at sea. The structure will be taken through the North Sea in order to dispose of it on land. This carries risks to the environment and to human life. Brent Spar should be disposed of at sea and the results should be monitored in order for decisions to be taken on similar structures which have ended their lives.

Wooden bridge of peace across troubled waters

Article Abstract:

Universidad Para la Paz in Costa Rica began its courses in 1980 and was set up by the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN). There are courses on sustainable development, human rights, and peaceful settlement of disputes. New courses are being set up in New York and California, and new subjects offered include drug trafficking, poverty and corruption. The rector is Francisco Barahonia who sees the university as having a major role to play in promoting peace.
