'We don't want students on our doorstep'
Article Abstract:
Issues relating to the impact that the growing numbers of students in Edinburgh, Scotland, living in a house of multiple occupation rather than in student accommodation is having on other residents of the city are examined in the light of the failure of Robin Cook, former foreign secretary, to prevent students moving into his apartment building. Many residents in Edinburgh feel that students are antisocial neighbours, but Rhoda Campbell, student president of Napier University, one of Edinburgh's four higher education institutions, argues that wild partying amongst students is a thing of the past and that the majority of them do not have the time or money to be partying as they are working to fund their education.

Siblings, power play and family fortunes
Article Abstract:
The influence that siblings have on the life choices of their brothers and sisters are examined in the light of the publication of the book "The Pecking Order: Which Siblings Succeed and Why" by Dalton Conley, New York University sociologist. Conley's book aims to challenge the view that parents are the key determinant of how children turn out and suggests that relationships with siblings also play an important factor.
