Whether or not forecasters
Article Abstract:
Mike Thrasher, one of a small group of academics who will serve as analysts on election day broadcasts, admits that he gets a tremendous buzz from being an election broadcaster. Thrasher stresses the importance of not talking to the audience as though they were political scientists, but not talking down to them either. Colin Rallings, another expert from Plymouth University, feels that he can cope with anything, provided he has done his homework properly. Early results which conflict with exit polls create tension for academics who are under pressure to predict the final outcome as soon as possible.

Drugs? Dutch courage needed
Article Abstract:
Dutch Member of Parliament Rick van der Ploeg, finance spokesman for the Labour Party and professor of political economy at the University of Amsterdam, would like other European Union countries to adopt the Dutch attitude to drugs. He points out that France and the UK, which pride themselves on their hardline approach, have nearly twice as many hard drug users proportionate to the population than the Netherlands with its liberal policy on drugs. Van der Ploeg would like domestic cannabis producers to be allowed to supply the Netherlands' 'coffee shops', the cafes licensed to sell cannabis.

'We knew nothing about this'
Article Abstract:
Peter Longerich, professor of modern German history at Royal Holloway, University of London, has studied the question of whether ordinary Germans were aware of the Holocaust and has written a book 'davon haben wir nichts gewusst' about it. The title of the book is a phrase often repeated by Germans when questioned about the Holocaust and the language of the phrase is subtly significant.
