Why research pays
Article Abstract:
The way in which modern states should structure their support for education and research in science and technology is among the important financial issues addressed by the Dearing committee on higher education. The Dearing report recognises that research and teaching are complementary and mutually reinforcing activities in that money used to pay for research also supports the education of the next generation of scientists and engineers. However the report avoids the question of whether a distinction should be made between so-called basic and applied science in determining how public research funds should be spent.

Formation of a future workforce
Article Abstract:
To ensure British further education colleges are producing students with skills wanted by employers those providing the training must be better informed. Colleges need to be more flexible to link their output to the needs of employers. Students should be given information on their prospects of finding work before they undertake a course of study. There has been a suggestion further education funding in the past did not adequately serve the needs of the students or the employers. The number of further education students rose by 33% between 1994-95 and 1998-99.
