Workhorses of the system
Article Abstract:
The number of students taking on postgraduate studies has increased to over 10,000 in 1999 from just over 3,000 in 1992. Many find they are unable to complete their work within the three years for which they have been funded and have to take on paid work to pay for their final year. A study looking into the experiences of postgraduate students found many were inadequately supervised. Some observers are concerned about the standard of teaching from postgraduate students who have very limited time. Others are calling for the setting up of guidelines for the supervision of postgraduate students.

RAE of hope for industry links
Article Abstract:
The Higher Education Funding Council for England is looking at ways of ensuring that the 2001 research assessment exercise (RAE) takes account of industrially relevant research being undertaken by universities. This follows comments from academics about the RAE having appeared to penalise work undertaken with industry in the past. It will be possible to include processes, products, patents and buildings for consideration in the 2001 RAE.
