Yes lobby battles to win Welsh sceptics
Article Abstract:
University of Wales, Swansea, politics lecturer Jonathan Bradbury points to the total lack of any sense of the politics of identity in the white paper issued in support of the Welsh assembly. Former vice chancellor of the University of Wales Ken Morgan sees devolution as a significant moment in national history since there will be an elected body devoted to Wales as a whole for the first time. However campaigners for a 'Yes' vote in the devolution referendum on Sep. 18, 1997, are having to fight the sceptical view that a Welsh assembly could soon come to resemble a single-party council.

Labour's dealings with peer pressure
Article Abstract:
The Labour government's manifesto commitment to reforming the House of Lords has implications for the higher education sector. The effect of abolishing the voting and speaking rights of hereditary peers is unclear since hereditary peers have not played a major role in higher education debates. The possible creation of a wholly elected House of Lords has greater implications since the education interests of its members would tend towards schools rather than higher education. The future of life peers is important since around 100 of them have an active interest in higher education.

Boom in local heroics
Article Abstract:
The 1995 conference of the Regional Studies Association in Gothenberg, Sweden, tackled a number of issues including spatial planning and sustainability. Regional studies has become increasingly important despite pressure from globalization. A stronger role for European regions could increase regional disparities within the European Union, according to one critic at the conference. The site was used to compare docklands regeneration in Gothenberg with London, England.
