Article Abstract:
A personal account of the differing ways in which universities in the UK deal with faculty members who have retired but who wish to retain links with their departments. While some institutions have allowed professors to retain their rooms and have given them new titles such as "research professor", other institutions simply allow their retired staff to keep their library cards.

Throw a little light on a Dark Ages pay system
Article Abstract:
An analysis of the performance-related pay system being used in the higher education sector, with particular attention paid to Lancaster University, at which the author is professor of social research. It is argued that the current system is too opaque, with no real criteria for what is deemed good performance and no real opportunity to seek feedback.
