...believe university pay needs to reflect performance
Article Abstract:
The head of reward for Hay Group people management consultancy argues that it is time for pay management in higher education in the United Kingdom to stop clinging to the tradition that dictates that men tend to be paid more than women and that long service is more valued that ability and results and begin developing a level of flexibility that will allow it to attract and retain the best people. It is acknowledged that human resource directors at universities find themselves in a difficult position, stuck between finance directors who believe that pay reform will result in unsustainable expense and staff who believe that change is only about cost savings, but it is argued that changes in the pay structure are needed and the archaic approach to pay and career progression needs to be reformed.

...believe independent study is under threat
Article Abstract:
Issues relating to the contention that the ability of students to develop understandings that do not depend on the opinion or authority of others is under threat are examined. It is argued that in order to foster intellectual independence, firstly the nature of learning, evidence and originality needs to be debated with students in every subject, then anything that makes the students dependent on the authority of the lecturer in a simply reproducible way needs to be removed from the teaching materials, while the student is then encouraged to produce their own paths through complex material and develop the confidence to exercise their own critical capacity.

...believe universities need theology and theology needs faith
Article Abstract:
Theological theology is vital to the modern university. It encourages interdisciplinary conversation and suggests that universities might have a rationale other than the utilitarian and pragmatic one. It is argued that in the modern liberal secular university, displaying a commitment to, for example, Christianity, Judaism, Islam or Buddhism, is seen as very definitely odd, and possibly even anathema.
