g whiz! IQ is a clever concept

Article Abstract:

Studies looking at the role of hereditary in intelligence has suggested it accounts for around 50% although the causes of the other 50% remains unknown. It has been acknowledged there is a 'general factor' or g in intelligence which can be measured. The discovery of g has allowed different activities to be weighed, known as 'g loading' in order than can be compared with each other. The Novartis Foundation is holding a meeting where behavioural geneticists and evolutionary psychologists will discuss intelligence.

A measure of freedom

Article Abstract:

IQ testing is a useful means of assessment and can provide valuable information for employers. It can predict productivity and performance at work in a more efficient way than conventional examinations. IQ tests have been designed to measure cognitive ability and do not show women as inferior, so are not a simple ploy developed by white men. They should not be discredited because some scientists have misused them. They allow freedom from credentialism and thus provide opportunities in education.

A narrow gauge

Article Abstract:

Using intelligence tests to replace exams implies that intelligence is innate, predominates as an influence on intelligent activity, and can be measured accurately at a young age. There are different forms of intelligence rather than a single factor. Concepts and insight need to be learnt and are not innate. Coaching can help children improve their scores on intelligence tests, which means that it cannot be accurately measured and is not innate.
